Underrated Movie #294 ~ All is Lost

All is Lost
In this harrowing drama — which has very little dialogue — Robert Redford portrays a man stranded alone at sea, courageously battling a hole in his boat and a ferocious storm as he struggles to survive with just a sextant and maritime maps to guide him. (Netflix) My Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars.

Underrated Movie #293 ~ Capturing the Friedmans

Capturing the Friedmans
A family in crisis is “captured” through home video in this searing documentary about the Friedmans, an upper-middle-class family who found their world turned upside down when father and son were charged with horrible crimes. The media inundated the airwaves with coverage of the alleged crime, but some of the best footage — seen here publicly for the first time — was shot by the Friedman family members themselves. Warning: Difficult subject matter. My Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars.

Underrated Actor ~ Frank Whaley

Frank Whaley

Here’s a man you may recognize but yet might not have known his name. Frank Whaley is a critically acclaimed actor/writer/director who has been around for almost 30 years, but is probably best known for his roles in Pulp Fiction and Field of Dreams. He has written and directed four films including the underrated The Jimmy Show, starring himself, Carla Gugino and Ethan Hawke. He is also the lead actor with Kevin Spacey in the underrated Swimming With Sharks. Other notable appearances include Ironweed (1987), Born on the Fourth of July (1989), The Doors (1991), Career Opportunities (1991), JFK (1991), I.Q. (1994), Broken Arrow (1996), Vacancy (2007), and Drillbit Taylor (2008). Click here for a complete list.

Underrated Movie #292 ~ Klepto

Klepto
Everything changes for kleptomaniac Emily Brown (Meredith Bishop) when she’s caught red-handed by a store detective (Jsu Garcia) in this crime drama. Counseling and medication prove no match for Emily’s overwhelming compulsion, but her life takes a turn when she encounters a detective who seems more interested in the klepto he’s collared than in recovering stolen merchandise. (Netflix) Good independent crime drama on a tiny budget. My Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars.
