Underrated Movie #321 ~ A Walk Among the Tombstones

A Walk Among the Tombstones
Don’t be turned away because of Liam Neeson’s streak of bad action movies… this isn’t one of those. This is rated 6.6 on imDb, which means that people have missed the boat here. This is a bullseye! Hired by a heroin dealer to hunt down his wife’s killers, private eye Matt Scudder dives into New York City’s seamy underworld, where his search turns into a lethal cat-and-mouse game with two vicious psychopaths targeting drug traffickers’ families. (Netflix) My Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars.

Underrated Movie #317 ~ Cold In July

Cold In July
When a man kills a home invader in self-defense, the burglar’s father begins threatening the victim’s young son. But soon, both men will become embroiled in a mystery that eclipses the conflict already in play. (Netflix) This retro-thriller set in 1980’s Texas, complete with mullets, stars Michael C. Hall, Sam Shepard, and Don Johnson, who is particularly great here with an interesting role. I never liked Don Johnson all that much, but now I do. My Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars.

Underrated Movie #310 ~ The Firm

The Firm
A young lawyer (Tom Cruise) joins a prestigious law firm only to discover that it has a sinister dark side. Cruise delivers the most electrifying performance of his career in this riveting film based on the international best-seller. (Netflix) They don’t make them like this anymore. The Firm is one of the greatest thrillers of all time. It has a 6.8 rating on IMDb, when it should “firmly” be in the website’s Top 250, and it got luke-warm reviews from critics. What is wrong with you people? It just became available on Netflix for instant viewing, so I’m just now remembering how great it really is. My Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars.

Underrated Movie #298 ~ Deep Blue Sea

Deep Blue Sea
Two scientists conduct research on sharks, hoping to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. When they decide to take a dangerous shortcut, they end up breeding larger sharks with larger brains — and near-human intelligence. (Netflix) Yes, the plot might be pretty dumb, but this action thriller accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do, which is to get to the “gigantic sharks chasing people” as soon as possible. If you like “killer shark” movies, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better one than this. My Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars.

Underrated Movie #296 ~ Closed Circuit

Closed Circuit
Martin and Claudia, top-flight lawyers who happen to be former lovers, become targets when they’re teamed up to defend a notorious terrorist. As the trial unfolds, the danger causes the pair to reevaluate their allegiance to justice. (Netflix) A very well-made thriller… exactly the kind of move I’m on the lookout for. It might have plot holes galore, but it moved so fast that I didn’t care. Starring Eric Bana, Rebecca Hall, and Ciarán Hinds. My Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars.

In this harrowing drama — which has very little dialogue — Robert Redford portrays a man stranded alone at sea, courageously battling a hole in his boat and a ferocious storm as he struggles to survive with just a sextant and maritime maps to guide him. (Netflix) My Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars.
